John’s Story – Finding Hope after Loss with Suncoast Hospice Grief Support
When John Callahan's son died unexpectedly, he was heartbroken. John never imagined his son, Mikey, would suffer from a stroke at just 15 and be gone two weeks later.
Mikey was treated at All Children’s Hospital and then brought to Suncoast Hospice House Woodside for care. He died there with family around. “It happened so quickly. I was able to spend that last night with my son at Woodside. It’s strange when you hear your kid’s first words and his last words. You don’t ever want to hear his last words,” John said.
Mikey’s death took a huge toll on John physically, emotionally and spiritually. He had to learn how to come together and live on without him. He found his way through the pain with help from Suncoast Hospice’s grief counseling and support groups.
“I had to reassemble myself. I wouldn’t be able to do it without Suncoast Hospice. The groups gave me perspective that other people are going through the same thing. There is hope knowing you are not alone. I wrote in a journal every day for a year to help work through my emotions. I’m a different person now. I can express myself better,” he said.
John is so grateful he had Suncoast Hospice support him on his journey. “I’m appreciative of everything. Suncoast Hospice probably saved my life. I’m in a better place because of them.”
