Clara’s Story – Suncoast Hospice Music Therapy Comforts Husband and Wife
Sometimes, in the midst of the darkness of dementia, moments of light shine through – an awakening. Clara Witt experienced such a magical moment during a dance with her husband Chris. He had severe dementia and was living in an assisted living facility under Suncoast Hospice care that included music therapy. He spoke to her that day after months of silence.
“He said to me, ‘I’m not so good anymore, and you are. Thank you for taking such good care of me. I love you so much.’,” Clara said.
The couple shared a lifelong romance together married 50 years. She was in show business notably as a Rockette dancer. He served in the Army Reserves and worked for NASA. His comfort now meant everything. She was so grateful for the music.
“When the music therapy student stroked the frets of her instrument, he would reach out and touch it. He just loved it. She would sing to him. She took care of Chris and we noticed a change in him,” she said.
Others who gathered around his room and Clara herself felt the effects of the music, too. “It was a happy hour when the music therapist was there. The music helped me, too, because if you’ve ever taken care of someone you love, it’s very stressful emotionally. It helps the patient and the caregiver,” she said.
Clara appreciated being helped by such a caring organization. “Suncoast Hospice has been wonderful. Chris has received the extra attention he needed. And they call me to see how I’m doing. You can tell that people who work for Suncoast Hospice have this special gift of having heart.”
